What an hour in the oven actually costs

Cost = (preheat at full power + cooking time × duty cycle) × kW × price per kWh

An oven is a box that leaks heat, and the thermostat's job is to replace what leaks. From cold, the 2,500W element runs flat out for about 12 minutes to bring the cavity up to temperature. After that it is switched on only about 60% of the time. Multiply nameplate watts by hours and you will overstate the bill by roughly half.

Worked example (2,500W oven, on for one hour, $0.16/kWh): 2.5 kW × 12/60 h = 0.5 kWh of preheat, plus 2.5 kW × 48/60 h × 0.6 = 1.2 kWh of baking = 1.70 kWh × $0.16 = $0.27 an hour. The oven's average draw across that hour is 1,700W, not 2,500W.

Why our appliance page quotes a bigger number

The electric oven appliance page does the standard watts-times-hours sum: 2.5 kW for an hour a day, every day, is $146 a year. It is the right calculation for a constant load, and an oven is not one. Apply the duty cycle to that same hour a day and you get $99. Cook the 4 nights a week that most households actually do, for 45 minutes rather than sixty, and you land on the $44 on this page. Neither number is wrong; they answer different questions.

Yearly cost by oven wattage and how often you cook

Every cell is a 45-minute cook at $0.16/kWh, priced for a year. Wattage matters here in a way it does not for a kettle: a kettle heats a fixed mass of water and a bigger element just gets there sooner, but a bigger oven is a bigger box losing more heat, so it genuinely burns more.

Even the worst cell on this table — a 4,000W pro range fired up every day of the year — comes to $123 a year. An oven has an enormous nameplate and almost no hours. That combination is the opposite of a refrigerator, which sips power but never stops, and it is why the oven is almost never the appliance behind a surprising bill. How much does a self-cleaning cycle cost?

About $0.96 a cycle. A pyrolytic self-clean drives the cavity to roughly 880°F — far above any baking temperature — and holds it there for two to four hours, burning the residue to ash. Holding a temperature that far above the kitchen means the element runs a much harder duty cycle than a bake does, around 80%.

A 2,500W oven at 80% duty. “Equivalent cooks” compares each cycle against one 45-minute dinner. Steam-clean cycles, which run at a low temperature for 20-30 minutes, use a small fraction of this.

The electricity is not the reason to think twice

Run self-clean twice a year and it adds about $1.92 to your annual bill — a rounding error against the $44the oven costs to cook with. The costs worth weighing are the other ones: the cycle bakes the door lock, the thermal fuse and the control board at a temperature nothing else in the oven's life reaches, and those are the parts that fail afterwards.

Never run it during a heatwave

Almost all of those 6 kWh end up as heat in your kitchen, over a few hours, in a house you are probably air conditioning. Your AC then pays to remove it — at its own efficiency, so a fraction of a kWh of cooling per kWh of heat. Run the cycle in the shoulder seasons and the same heat is doing useful work. Gas vs. electric oven cost

Gas is normally the cheaper fuel to bake with, and the margin is smaller than the argument it generates. A 18,000 BTU/hr bake burner running the same preheat-then-cycle pattern burns 0.18 therms an hour of burner time. At $1.50/therm that is $0.14 for the 45-minute cook that costs an electric oven $0.21.

“Break-even rate” is the electricity price at which the electric oven costs exactly what the gas one does: pay less than that per kWh and electric is the cheaper oven. The US average is $0.16, which is above the break-even on every row but the last — cheap gas beats average electricity, and it takes $2.50/therm gas before that flips. The comparison also gives gas the benefit of the doubt by assuming its burner cycles as little as an electric element does; in reality a gas oven vents its combustion gases, and the heat in them, out of the cavity, so it has to run more. A $14-a-year gap does not justify a conversion

That is the honest headline. Running a gas line to a kitchen that does not have one, or a 240V circuit to one that does not, costs hundreds of dollars and will not pay itself back inside a decade on baking alone. Cook on the fuel your kitchen already has. If you are choosing between the two in a house that offers both, choose on how they cook — gas gives you a live flame on the hob and a moister oven; electric gives you steadier bake temperatures — not on this table.

What the fuel comparison leaves out

Two things, both pointing the same way. A gas oven vents combustion products into the room, which is a ventilation question rather than a cost one. And most gas utilities bill a fixed monthly service charge on top of the per-therm rate — if the oven were the only gas appliance in the house, that standing charge alone would erase the $14 several times over.

How to cut what your oven costs to run

Every one of these works on the same two terms in the formula: the fixed preheat, and the hours the element spends replacing heat that escaped.

Cook more than one thing at a time

The 12-minute preheat costs $0.08 whether the oven holds one tray or three. Filling it splits that fixed cost across every dish, which is the one situation where a full-size oven beats a countertop one outright.

Use a small appliance for small food

Heating a whole cavity to bake two potatoes is most of what an oven wastes. An air fryer or a toaster oven heats a fraction of the volume in a fraction of the time.

Skip the preheat when it is not needed

Cakes and breads need a hot cavity from the first minute. Casseroles, roasts and anything cooking for over an hour do not — put them in cold and start the clock early. That is 38% of a 45-minute cook's energy doing useful work instead of waiting.

Keep the door shut

Opening the door drops the cavity around 25°F, and the element has to put every one of those degrees back at full power. Use the window and the light. The oven does not know you are curious; it just runs longer.

Turn it off early

A hot cavity holds its heat for a good ten minutes. On a long bake, killing the element for the last few minutes finishes the dish on stored heat and takes those minutes straight off the duty-cycle term.

Use convection if you have it

A fan moves hot air onto the food instead of waiting for it to drift there, so the same dish finishes sooner and often at a lower setting. Shorter cook, fewer element hours. More ideas in our energy savings guide.

The preheat is the only part of a cook where the element draws its full 2,500W, and it accounts for about 38% of a 45-minute cook's energy — but only 16% of a two-hour one. That is the useful shape of it: the longer the cook, the less the preheat matters, and the more sense it makes to batch several dishes into one heat-up rather than preheating twice.

Is an air fryer cheaper than an oven?

For one or two portions, clearly. A 2,500W oven spends $0.08 of electricity just heating an empty cavity before the food goes in. An air fryer or toaster oven has a fraction of the volume to heat, reaches temperature in two or three minutes, and draws about half the watts. The full-size oven only wins when you are filling it — several trays at once amortise one preheat across every dish on them.
